Welcome to our New Flagship Store!
We are exited to share with you the opening of the first Elk Flagship store! After nearly 14 years this exciting new store marks a landmark occasion and an exciting step in the Elk journey.
Our new space is located at 182 Little Collins St within a heritage building with a rich retail history. Our Co-Founder and Creative Director Marnie Goding, says of the space “Once we saw the incredible original features, like the curved glass, we knew it was the space for us.”
When planning the design of the space, Marnie and Adam collaborated with renowned interior designer Fiona Lynch to create a very unique and welcoming retail environment that reflects the ELK aesthetic while still pushing the boundaries of innovative interior design.
“We really wanted to create a space that was progressive in a design sense but remained warm and respectful to the Elk brand heritage. The brief to Fiona was to create this design evolution through the use of considered finishes, warm lighting, soft flooring and functionality as a priority.” Marnie explains. Fiona’s design response to this brief was to use a natural colour palette while creating depth and interest through the choice of finishes and materials. “Despite it being a small space, there was a lot of detail to consider” Fiona adds.
The resulting design creates an environment that is both warm and inviting. Supple leather adorns the pull-out accessories wall to encourage touch while aluminium details, luxurious corian stone and brass all play a role in creating a comfortable experience.
“Functionality was a key consideration in the design of this space. The conceptual architectural ceiling grid offers essential flexibility and versatility in the space for product display, while materiality was pushed in creative ways to add texture and warmth to the space” says Fiona.
A truly bespoke collaboration in every sense, Marnie, Adam and Fiona Lynch were able to engage with local makers and craftspeople to add warmth and personality to the modern design, “Within our business, collaborating with artisans is central to what we do so to have the opportunity to work with such talented creatives made the process very enjoyable. From hand polished plaster, bespoke stonemasonary, leather makers and sculptors all bringing their craft to the space made the process a true collaboration of artists" Marnie explains.

Remembering our troops
In commemoration of ANZAC day this Monday, we sat down with Ellie from our Elk Shop to hear a moving story of her great grandfather Robert Grey.
In 1939, at age 21 Robert Grey from Sydney Australia, enlisted in the Royal Australian Army. In 1941 Robert was sent to Libya, North Africa and was soon named one of the ‘Rats of Tobruk’. Robert and his best mate John, for eight months withstood tank attacks, artillery barrages and daily bombings.
Together they endured the searing heat of the desert, bitterly cold nights and hellish dust storms. They lived in dug-outs, caves and crevices earning the name, ‘tunnel rats’. Though created by the German’s, this name became popular with the Australians, who soon adopted the name with pride.
Sadly Robert was shot and hospitalised, suffering severe blood loss. Through this hardship, it was his mate John who played a huge part in keeping him alive by donating his own blood.
It is this moving example of mateship and compassion that makes us proud to be Australian. Our team at Elk, along with many others, hold touching memories similar to Ellie's story. This Monday, we proudly stand together to remember the hardships our troops and their families have experienced.
Lest We Forget.

Earth Day at Elk
In the Elk office we are constantly amazed by the delicious produce our wonderful Customer Service extraordinaire, Bec Fitzgibbon kindly brings in to share with the Elk Crew. Digging a little deeper into where all this nutritious bounty comes from we discovered the incredible garden that Bec’s Dad, Michael Fitzgibbon - with the help of his family - has created at their home in Woodend, a beautiful area in regional Victoria, Australia.
To celebrate Earth Day on Friday 22 April, we asked Michael to let us in on his secret tips to creating your very own garden wonderland of fresh organic seasonal produce, and in so doing, make a positive impact on the environment -
What’s growing this season in the Fitzgibbon vegetable garden?
Snow peas, pumpkins, sweet potatoes, PEANUTS! cucumbers, lots of tomatoes, heaps of passionfruit, corn, egg plants, capsicums, beetroot, zucchinis, squash, blueberries, chillies, limes, lemons, oranges, mandarins, lemon grass, heaps of herbs… and more…
Is the selection of vegetables the same every season or do you change it up?
We do like to change it up and try new things – the growing season in Woodend, Victoria, Australia, can be tricky with the cold weather and frosts but that’s not going to stop us experimenting! This season we planted sweet potatoes and peanuts for the first time – the peanuts were a success and now we’re anxiously awaiting the arrival of the sweet potatoes!
What are your secret tips for growing such an inspiring garden?
You have to love it and be excited by every new development. It’s a passion that rewards you in so many ways... We like to add a bit of art and interest to the garden so it’s not just functional but also fun to be around. The whole family has been involved – Bec even built the entrance arbor!
We have a ‘harvest basket’ that we all use to head down to the patch and round up a crop...
What are the rules of thumb you follow (green thumb if you wish – pardon the
Preparing the soil is a big one – veggies love soil rich in organic stuff. Regularly watering is critical – if it’s too patchy then things will seed quickly or just not develop. So, good rich soils and regular water – other than that a bit of fertilizer every now and again in the growing season and the let nature do the rest – we won’t use any chemicals or pesticides.
What is your daily routine when it comes to maintaining your garden?
Most days I take a walk through the garden and just enjoy seeing the changes.
Despite what many people may think, there is very little effort in maintaining a garden once it’s established, mulched, and has a watering system – pulling out the odd weed is about it!
We probably only water daily in the middle of summer otherwise every 2 -3 days is enough (rain water of course!).
Do you ever run out of vegetables?
We expanded the veggie patch this season and changed our approach so rather than using the garden to supplement our meals we challenge ourselves to make our meals from the garden – there’s nothing more satisfying than counting the different things in the meal that you grew yourself!
So we still rely on the supermarket a bit, but far less than we used to – our plan is to up the bar again this season.
What vegetable do you pride yourself in growing?
Hmm...whilst it’s not a vegetable, it’s hard not be proud of growing peanuts in Woodend!

The SS16 Quarry Print
Piles of crushed stone that had fallen from the great walls of a marble mine in Italy was the founding inspiration behind our gorgeous Quarry Print. Inspired by the jagged textures and lines in each fallen piece, we took pen to paper and started to recreate the shapes that would become his seasons ‘must have’ print.
A lot of thought has gone not just into the graphic, but into the fabrication of each piece within this micro collection. Delicate fabrics like silk are mixed together with strong colours inspired by nature to offer up something beautiful, light and easy to wear. Our Quarry Print V-Tunic Dress sees a timeless shape reimagined with the introduction of a new technique - plastisol printing. The plastisol ink gently tugs at the fabric creating a subtle crushed look that adds texture and interest. The classic tunic shape means that this dress can be worn as a luxe beach coverall, a statement dress for a night out, or simply pair it with some skinny jeans and a pair of heels for a stylish office look.
Also featured in the plastisol print is the essential Quarry Tank. A perfectly tailored shape mixed with the flattering crushed cupro fabric makes this the perfect summer partner. Available in four colour ways, our pick is the subtle Ice with Tobacco Print. A truly unique colour that looks instantly luxurious! The soft colour palettes available in this tank and the fine line detail of the quarry print will ensure that this tank blends seamlessly into your wardrobe where we know it will become a fast favourite.
For a pop of brighter colour, invest in the very versatile silk Quarry Scarf. We think it’s the perfect length to wear loosely draped around the neckline, or tied into your hair for an effortlessly cool summer look. We know we will be wearing the Tanagerine by the poolside all summer long!
We hope that you are able to unearth your own summer story.Read More

Introducing the Strokes Print
The days are getting longer, the mornings brighter and the air is slowly warming up. Summer is coming and it’s going to be a hot one!
The nextvchapter of our Summer 16 story has arrived and is now available in stores throughgout America and Canada and online.. Our summer range sees fresh colours, bold prints, crushed textures and flattering silhouettes come together to create the essential wardrobe for the warmer weather ahead.
Continuing on from the founding Unearth story, natural stone, crystal and earth were the founding inspirations for this high summer collection. We started with a photo of magnified crystal structures and our designers set to work carefully manipulating the images in-house to create something truly unique for our customers. The result was our gorgeous new Strokes Collection.
The Strokes is an explosion of on-trend colours digitally printed onto key summer clothing styles made from easy to care for fabrics. Available in two colour ways, The Green Multi Print inspires thoughts of Sunstone Crystals and Topaz while The Pink Multi Print reminds us of Rose Quartz, Poudretteite’s and Garnet stones in delicious pink tones with hints of blues. There is a colour palette within these prints to suit all wardrobes!
Relax into the spring weather with a Strokes update of our Gathered Back Pant. Featuring a tailored look front with a unique feathered elasticated back for comfort and made from a breathable lightweight fabric, these pants are the ultimate for a relaxed summer look. Pair with a cotton slub tee and some sandals for a great look for work and weekends!
Another old favourite that has been re-vamped by the new print is our classic Summer Tank. A sweet and feminine style with a simple scoop back and side panels for added interest. The Strokes Tank is light, comfortable and made from easy care Viscose so you can just simply wash and go. A great travel companion!
Making their debut into the Elk range is the contemporary, box shaped Strokes Top and Dress. Simple shift shapes for a relaxed look that suits all body shapes. The Strokes shift dress drapes beautifully from the shoulder to flatter the body and features large side pockets – a must have for a great shift dress! Hot Tip - Pair the classic shift style Strokes Dress with the Crystalline Necklace and the metallic Tresko Clog for a polished spring carnival look.
Unfortunately, like all good things, the Strokes collection is a limited edition for SS16 and the range won’t last long. To ensure you don’t miss out on Elk’s most feminine print to date, contact us now to find your local Strokes re-seller or snap up your favourite look online now here. Mr Elk Summer 16 has arrived!
Every concept has a foundation. It is born from an idea, an inspiration or a feeling that acts as a trigger. An old photograph of a marble mine in Italy showing vast pieces of stone being carved from great strong quarry walls was our starting point for this season's MR Elk - UNEARTH
This season for MR Elk is all about tone, texture and construction. With rugged materials like cotton canvas, vegetable tanned leathers and crushed buffalo hides, this collection sees a unique blend of concurrent style and classic fabrication.
Here are our top picks from the new collection:
In the lead up to the holiday season, we’ve introduced the MAND collection. Made from thick durable vegetable tanned cow leather, the MAND wallet and overnight bag make the perfect travelling team. The overnight bag has been lined with natural cotton and also features a detachable cotton shoulder strap to take it from an overnight, to an everyday bag. The MAND overnight bag will be due mid May. Pre-order yours today by contacting us here.
The SOLNA is our new interpretation of the classic working man’s briefcase. Using crushed and treated buffalo leather to achieve its texture, the SOLNA briefcase and document holder has been designed with business in mind. Featuring pure cotton lining, with a thick saddle leather strap and trim, this bag is not only an attractive update on a classic style, but its well laid our internal compartments make it functional as well.
For the man who has almost everything, we’ve brought back a forgotten accessory. The pocket sized magnetic DYR money clip. Made from a thick buffalo leather that has been carefully embossed and dyed to look like alligator hide. The DYR clip features super strength magnets to help keep all of your notes together in the one easy-to-reach for place. For a brave new look, check out the DYR’s counter offer, the backpack here.
The MR Elk collection is the epitome of contemporary men's style. Tried and tested designs using thick raw leathers, cotton canvas and tough hardware, the Mr Elk Unearth Summer 2015 range is available online and in selected stores now. To find your local MR Elk stockist, email us here.Read More
It’s time to shake off the last of winter and welcome a fresh new look. We are so very excited this week to be able to bring to you our new chapter of our journey – Unearth.
Every concept has a foundation. It is born from an idea, an inspiration or a feeling. In architecture, literature, art or business there has to be a trigger, a starting point from which a concept flows.
We have taken a different path this season. Clean lines and smooth cool colours contrast wonderfully against crumpled and jagged textures taken directly from nature. Brilliant crystals and agates gave us the palette of bright blues, cadmium yellow, crisp white and rosewater tints with stunning metallic highlights that can be seen throughout the range.
We embrace the metallic trend this season with new classics like our Tresko Clog and Metallisk leather range. Crushed stone inspired a new finish for some of our leather and gave way to the Krolle and Solna pieces.
This season’s apparel focuses on a well balanced range of fabrics in subtle hues all designed to be layering staples. Our oversized Kimono Shirt and Sheer Stepped Top will especially be easy ‘go to’ pieces throughout the season.
With blue tones taking centre stage, we have crafted the perfect denim jeans to take you from winter through to spring. The Oslo Denim Jean and the Sunday Denim Shirt are our take on classic men’s tailoring blended with contemporary casualness.
You will see old favourites back with a fresh new twist like our Panel Top and Dress and our Tank Dress and Top in a new original Elk gemstone print. Must haves for this in-between weather that spring often brings.
This collection is a bold new direction for us. We hope you love our latest offering as much as we have loved crafting it for you. The collection is now available in independent Elk stockists across the United States and Canada, as well as online.
Be inspired to unearth your own summer story.

The Great Backpack Comeback!
There are certain things in life that you never outgrow. A penchant for sneakers, a soft spot for 80s movies and an understanding that backpacks are by far the most convenient way to transport your belongings from point A to point B. And while we've mastered the balancing act of carrying our phones, bags, morning coffee, etc; it can get a little old at times (not to mention requires some serious skills), to juggle these work essentials while running to catch the tram. There is an easy way to give yourself a hand — simply swap your work tote for a work-appropriate backpack.
We know your tastes have matured since school and we're here to help out by bringing you a totally grown-up, super cool backpack. Soft and super functional, the Metallisk Back Pack has been made using beautiful tactile leather. Etched and punched like a vintage tin ceiling, this structural back pack is more like a work of art. With a classic silhouette, the unique front panels feature either patent or metal foil leather and the backpack can be worn on your back, or simply pull the strap through to use it as a shoulder bag.
Available here in Black/Black or Copper/Tan. Made from 100% cow leather and finished with love by hand.Read More

Meet the maker behind Hacienda Austin
We’re so proud that our little Melbourne label can now be found in over 1500 stores worldwide. Being stocked by unique, independently owned tastemakers allows us to meet some of the most interesting and talented people within the retail industry. Today, we would like to introduce you to one of those clever cookies. Our very own girl crush - Jessica Beattie.
Jessica is the brainchild behind the luxury range boutique HACIENDA in downtown Austin, Texas America. Originally a young icon on Wall Street, Jessica chose to leave New York behind after the birth of her twins to live a brighter and quieter life in Austin. ”I wanted to do something more creative than my finance career and to take on the challenge of seeing through with my vision” Jessica says on her decision to start her own business and label.
Since opening its doors in 2014, Beattie has created a local destination for locals to find products that fit her three criterion. HACIENDA’s collection are niche, luxury and organically sourced from small artisans locally and abroad. “HACIENDA encapsulates the modern ranch lifestyle concept into a home, fashion and gift store. [It’s] an ever-evolving mix of local artisan collaborations”.
We caught up with the enchanting Jessica recently to learn a little more about the woman behind this distinctive store behind this distinctive store.
Can you tell us what is the one word that describes you the best?
Essential travel item?
My Louis Vuitton duffel bag has always carried everything I need, from a weekend getaway to months on safari in Africa and looks no worse the wear for being flung all around.
Sweet or Salty?
Sweet, if chocolate is involved.
Favourite TV Show or Movie?
James Bond movies.
Cowboys and surfers.
Describe in five words or less your ideal day.
Nature, sunshine and solitude.
When nobody's watching I...
Carry on with whatever I’m doing – I don’t care who’s looking.
What did you think you were going to be when you grew up?
A sports agent or lawyer.
Beach holiday or mountain holiday?
My Norwegian-American husband has converted me from a beach girl into a lover of the mountains and our family so enjoys spending time at our place in Colorado.
Where is on the very top of your travel bucket list?
Oh, wow, what’s not on the list? Especially now that my kids love to travel I want to revisit some of my favorites with them. I recently checked off my number one by taking my daughter to Paris and my son has been asking to go to San Francisco, which will be so much fun. Someday I will get to see a tiger in India, which is the only safari experience I’ve missed. But of all the places I’ve never seen and most wanted to visit, I would have to say Vancouver tops the list.
If you were stranded on an island and could only take one item with you, what would it be?
Easy – one of HACIENDA’s lightweight Turkish towels! That would be my bedding and wardrobe right there! I’m sure I could always find some coconuts on the island…
If you could have any 5 people over for dinner, who would they be?
My mom, dad, husband and two children. And luckily for me, we get to do this fairly often.
What animal are you?
A snow leopard
If I were a Disney character, I’d be....
Elsa (From the film Frozen)
Favourite Elk item this season?
The Chunky wooden necklaces – so fresh and bold.
We are so very thrilled that a huge range of Elk’s leather bags, wallets, jewellery and Mr Elk can now be found in HACIENDA Austin. Located at shop 204 Colorado Street, if this store isn’t on your shopping destination bucket list – it should be!
Now…. if we go missing for a few weeks, you can probably find us camping inside HACIENDA’s very own in-store custom built Nomadic tipi, or braiding Jessica’s adorable pony Woody’s hair.Read More

Elk now in Carmel-by-the-Bay California
Nestled within the heart of the City of Carmel, California, lies an Elk stockist like no other. Steeped in rich history much like the town it belongs to, the Carmel Bay Company was founded in 1972 by the clever husband and wife duo Barney and Patty Scollan.
Located within the very quaint and historic Seven Arts Building on the intersection of Lincoln Street and Ocean Avenue, it was actually Patty’s grandfather Herbert Heron who designed and built this unique centre for the arts. Man of many talents, Herbert was an enormous arts enthusiast, avid Shakespearian, as well as the acting mayor of the town previously dubbed Carmel-by-the-Sea. During his time as mayor, he saw the city bloom into the cultural hub that it continues to be today.
Now, this fairytale cottage is the home to a range of carefully curated homewares, recycled furniture, books, fashion and accessories that have been sourced from independent makers all around the globe.
For over 40 years, Barney and Patty have maintained a keen sense of style. The collection amassed at the Bay Company has evolved from Danish antiques and poster art, through to a trend-setting luxury women’s boutique. You will find yourself spending a few hours gazing over their treasure trove.
A huge range of Elk leather goods, jewellery and apparel can now be found at Carmel Bay including key pieces from our Fall 15 range ‘Equinox’. To see the range in person or to place orders, pop downtown to the southwest corner of Lincoln Street and Ocean Avenue, or contact the team at Carmel’s on 831.624.3868
We are so thrilled to have become a chapter within the Carmel Bay Company’s story. For those lucky enough to be locals, or for those of you passing through this dreamy bayside city, we recommended that you pop by and say hello to the Scollan’s and have a peek at their ever-evolving store.Read More

UNICEF Care Package
Our directors and owners of Elk Marnie Goding and Adam Koniaras, have just been featured in this month Australian House and Garden! Magazine! Read the full article on how Elk has paved the way for Australian labels to support their manufactures and workers here:
Melbourne firm Elk has blazed a trail on the retail scene since it launched 11 years ago, selling wooden jewellery in its distinctive lozenge and disc shapes. It’s now leading the way as an ethical small business, having donated $135,000 to some of the worlds’ poorest children during the last four years.
Led by husband-and-wife team Marnie Goding and Adam Koniaras – a marketer and jeweller respectively – Elk quickly expanded into apparel, leathergoods and homewares. At each step of the way the couple has aimed to “provide support for the human side of the business”. That has meant aligning themselves with ethically operated businesses as well as providing financial support to communities in the Philippines and India.
All of Elk’s jewellery is made in the Philippines by two family-run-businesses. “The people we work with are very honourable. They look after their workers and support their employee’s kids to go to school,” says Marnie.
After a few visits to the Philippines, Marnie and Adam noticed many children were not at school. After investigating charities in the Philippines and India – where Elk’s leathergoods and footwear are made – the couple gave their support to UNICEF.
Elk became a UNICEF platinum sponsor in 2009, but Marnie and Adam wanted to do more. “We came up with the idea of a matched-donation program,” says Marnie. “Our online customers are asked to make a gold-coin donation when they make a purchase and we match that donation.”
The project was launched in 2011 and has raised $135,000 making Elk the largest small-business contributor to UNICEF Australia. UNICEF Australia’s partnership manager Eammon Bryant says Elk’s initiative is amazing. “By thinking outside the box in its e-commerce and giving customers the chance to top-up at the checkout with a UNICEF donation, Elk can have a profound long-term impact on the lives of children.”

Sundays with Elk and MasterChef’s Anna Webster!
Today we have a special treat for you.
The very talented Anna Webster from this years MasterChef, has joined us today to share with you one of her all time favourite seasonal dishes. Just to help sweeten up your Sunday! We'll let her take it from here...
I always find it kind of weird that citrus fruits are at their best during winter. In my mind, a fresh, zingy, citrusy dessert goes better with sun and sand than it does with doonas and open fires. Yet, the profusion of yellow, green and orange fruits spilling from greengrocers and market stalls make this truth undeniable. And as the old adage goes, when life gives you lemons, make lemonade; or in this case, when life gives you beautiful peak-season mandarins, turn them into syrup and drizzle it over this delicious chocolate panna cotta.
The combination of mandarin, chocolate and hazelnut is a harmonious one, and there are several textures at play here too which makes this dish really nice to eat. It’s important to nail the balance of sweetness between the chocolate panna cotta and the syrup – ideally, the panna cotta will be slightly on the bitter side, which will help to balance the sweetness of the mandarin. Garnishing with mint or basil leaves will help to lighten this dessert, as will fresh mandarin segments and grated zest.
CHOCOLATE PANNA COTTA WITH MANDARIN SYRUP AND HAZELNUT TUILE
FOR THE PANNA COTTA:
- 200g good-quality dark chocolate, chopped (70% cocoa solids)
- 2.5 leaves of gold-strength gelatine
- 190ml full cream milk
- 250ml thickened cream
- 80g caster sugar
- 1 vanilla pod, seeds scraped
- Soak gelatine leaves in cold water until soft
- Lightly grease dariole moulds with neutral tasting oil (such as grapeseed) – you should be able to fill between 4 - 6 moulds, depending on size. Don’t skip this step; these can be hard to demould otherwise.
- Place cream, milk, sugar and vanilla in a saucepan and bring to a simmer, stirring to dissolve sugar
- Remove from heat and add chocolate, whisking to combine
- Squeeze excess water from gelatine and add to the warm mixture, whisking to dissolve
- Pass mixture through a sieve before pouring into moulds
- Refrigerate until set (at least 2 hours)
- To demould, dip moulds into warm water before running a knife around the inside of the panna cotta and turning onto a plate
FOR THE MANDARIN SYRUP:
- 180ml mandarin juice
- 1 tbsp caster sugar
- Grated zest of 1 mandarin
- 2 mandarins, segmented
- Combine juice, zest and sugar in a small saucepan over medium-high heat
- Stir to dissolve sugar and then cook until mix starts to become syrupy (about 5 mins)
- Add mandarin segments and cook until tender (about 3 minutes)
- Refrigerate until cool. You can brighten the syrup with a squeeze of fresh mandarin or lemon juice if required.
FOR THE TUILE BISCUITS:
- 50g hazelnuts, toasted and skinned
- 25g plain flour
- 50g butter, melted
- 55g caster sugar
- 2 egg whites
- Blitz 25g hazelnuts with the flour in a food processor to a fine powder
- Finely chop the remaining 25g nuts and set aside
- Mix nut powder with melted butter, sugar and egg whites
- Spread mix as thin as possible on a silicon baking mat or a baking paper lined tray. Sprinkle with chopped nuts and bake at 170 degrees until the edges have started to colour.
- Cut rounds from biscuits then return to the oven until golden all over. If you’d prefer tuile shards, bake until golden then allow to cool before snapping into desired shapes. You can also drape the biscuits over a rolling pin or similar while warm – they will harden into this shape once cool.
Bon appétit ! Xx

Meet Marcy Landolfo of Communion
One of the biggest accomplishments that we are most proud of here at Elk is that our little Australian brand is now found all over the globe in unique and beautiful independent retailers. One of our favourite international stores is the lovely ‘Communion’.
Based in Portland Oregon since 2012, owner Marcy Landolfo has created a local destination for men and women to find distinctive, quality crafted fashion labels sourced from all around the world. You can learn a little more about the Communion ethos here.
We sat down with Marcy recently and asked her to take part in our Mad Minute interview so that you can get to know a little more about this marvellous dog loving woman from Portland!
Hi Marcy. Tell us, what is one word that describes you the best? Honest
Favourite travel item? Arcona Triad Pads. Google it. They’re amazing!

Favourite TV Show or Movie? Currently True Detective.

Beach holiday or Mountain holiday? Mountain
Where is on the very top of your travel bucket list? Well I worked for an airline for 15 years, so I kind of took care of that. But I will always go back to Italy!
If you could have any 5 people over for dinner, who would they be? One Chef plus four ladies from ‘Advanced Style’! LOVE them!
What animal are you? Well the Chinese calendar says I’m a ‘Pig’ which is also my first dogs name! So I will go with Pig despite the implications…
If I were a Disney character, I’d be.... NONE thank you very much!

Elk and Iris Apfel
“Transformation, punch, individuality: One or all of the above are why you should wear jewellery.”
These are the wise words of New York’s sharp-witted 93-year-old style icon Iris Apfel captured by the late great documentarian Albert Maysles for his last film – IRIS.
For over 75 years she has been an influence within the fashion and interior design industry and has the largest collection to date, of couture accessories in the western world. She has made herself known with her flamboyant style, sharp wit, vibrant personality and exceptional creativity. But Maysles newest feature film portrays Iris Apfel as more than just this fashion symbol, but rather an ordinary woman whose free spirit has helped her lead an extraordinary life.
Thanks to a partnership with the Melbourne International Film Festival, we are pleased to bring IRIS to local cinema screens. As proud Melbournians, we are huge fans of the MIFF festival and love seeing every year our city’s cinemas packed to the brim with film lovers and aficionados alike.
IRIS will be screening for two nights only and we invite you to come and join us and watch one of our own personal style icons on the big screen! Tickets are now available online here. Hurry, as seats are limited and as the only fashion piece of the festival, this film is sure to sell out.
We hope to see you there!

Elk's Essential Wooden Jewellery Care
Today we are so excited to be able to present to you our newest colour range of essentials! Beautiful basics available in key colours to take you from winter to summer for many years to come. You can view the newest range of Elk Essentials here (hyperlink when page is ready).
What you may not have realised about these pieces is that they have all been constructed using sustainable plantation timber in the Philippines.
All Elk products are designed right here in Melbourne, Australia and our wooden jewellery is then made by hand by a small family run manufacturer using traditional techniques.. The wood is first cut to our designs and sanded, then dyed in large baths of natural dye before being tumbled in a special wax sealant to lock in the rich colours. The wax is non-toxic and gives the piece a lovely finish.
All of our wood is sourced from farms associated with the GoGreen Foundation. GoGreen is a sustainable environmental program aimed at ensuring that all wood harvested and manufactured for the fashion industry is done under strict forest management guidelines. It ensures that all materials used are recyclable, replenished and ensure that no reefs are affected by the harvest of farmed forest. Because of the traditional techniques used in construction, our wooden jewellery will require some care to extend its life and keeping it looking as good as possible.
Our wooden articles will maintain their colour and appearance as long as they are sealed properly and kept dry. Should you accidentally wet the jewellery, milky spots may appear which is due to the waxy outer layer lifting from the bead. To help remove these spots, simply apply a very small amount of natural bees wax or a waxed based furniture polish. Using a clean cloth, gently remove any wax deposits and restore your pieces lovely shine and colour, then gently buff the surface to remove any excess with a dry cloth and leave to set for a few minutes. This process will not only help remove any marks, it will help restore colour and re-seal the beads to protect them for future wear.
Not sure what wax to use? Never fear. We have made some for you!
We now have available natural bees wax in convenient little pots to help you care for your jewellery at home. You can purchase the wax here or simply contact your local Elk stockist to see if they have some in store for you to use.
Perhaps it's time to restore some of your old classics?Read More
Caring for your winter knits
Customers often ask us how to care for their Elk woollen items. Woollen knits, can be quite tricky to care for, but if you treat your knitwear right, they will last you for many winters to come. Here are some of our frequently asked questions and some of our top tips on how to care for your knitwear.
How should I wash my woollen and wool blended items?
For best results, woollen items should not be machine-washed. We recommend to always hand wash your knitwear. Ideally, you should rinse your garment first in cool to lukewarm water. Then simply add some detergent and allow to soak for 10 minutes. It’s always important to use a mild wool detergent and if you wish, an approved wool fabric softener. Once you have soaked your garment in the detergent, thoroughly rinse with cold water.
Can I dry my knitwear in a tumble dryer?
There are some treatments that can applied to wool to enable it to withstand heat, however these treatments can lose their effectiveness over time. Woollen fibres can constrict drastically with heat, so we strongly recommend to keep your woollies away from the dryer.
Can I line dry my knitwear?
Ideally, your woollen items should be dried flat. Wet wool can stretch and lose its shape very easily, so it’s best to avoid the washing line. We recommend drying your knitwear flat over a towel. A handy hint is to gently roll your knit inside a dry towel to help expel excess water. Then gently re-shape your knit and let dry on a new towel away from heaters or the sun. It may take up to 8 hours to dry this way, but we find it delivers the best results and helps prolong your garment’s lifespan.
Why should I re-shape the garment after washing?
Because of the natural texture and stretch of many yarns, it can easily lose its shape after wash and wear. To help keep your knits looking as new, it’s important to gently re-shape them after washing. We recommend to first turn your garment inside out, and then gently tug the fabric back into shape, and lay flat to dry. Once dry, the knit will maintain its integrity and shape until your next wash - provided it’s stored correctly.
Can I hang my Elk knitwear?
Wool is a naturally heavy fibre and when hung, it can stretch the shape out a little and increase your garments length. Woollens should be kept neatly folded or rolled, and stored in a shelf or draw. When it’s time to pop your knits away during the warmer months, keep them in an airtight container to deter those pesky garment moths! Popping a touch of natural eucalyptus oil on your woollen garments before storing will also help deter moths.
My knitted jumper is pilling. What can I do to prevent this?
Well there isn’t anything that will stop knitwear from pilling completely. Pilling is just a natural result of the fibres coming together at a rapid rate to form your garment’s thread. Some of the fibres can be shorter than others so they can lift to the surface and gather into the little balls you see. But don’t despair! There are some things you can do to try and prevent the severity of the pilling.
When washing your knit, always turn the garment inside out and avoid using harsh detergents that can dry out the natural fibres. When pilling occurs, you can gently remove them by hand with a de-pilling comb or you can choose to use an electric de-piller that will gently shear off any fluff balls.
We hope this answers some of your questions. Remember to always read the care label of your garment before washing. If you are still unsure or would like further information, contact our team at email@example.com.Read More
Choosing the right gift for dad
Dads are notoriously hard to buy for. They never tell you what they really want and rarely admit to needing anything. Don’t despair just yet. There is still plenty of time to find him the perfect gift to say ‘thank you’ so pop those macaroni frames away for good and be inspired by our top picks!
Nothing says ‘I love you’ more than joining in on one of dad’s hobbies. Whether it be a small fishing trip, going out to watch a game, or even getting your green thumb on in the garden - he is sure to appreciate the time that you will spend together. Take it one step further this year and investigate what’s going on in your local community. If dad’s into bike riding, see if there is a local bike riding club that you can join together. Has no hobbies? Introduce him to one that you can do together. Perhaps have a look at some rock climbing or cooking courses nearby.
Is you dad quite the tech head? Perhaps you can help fuel his love of gadgets with music? A membership to an online music streamer is sure way to make his day. For a guide on what streaming service is right for your dad, jump on over to the informative team at CNet for their app breakdown. Read the article here.
Has your dad had the same wallet for so long that the seams are bursting? Or perhaps he is still using that Velcro wallet from the early 90s? You know? The one that you can hear being opened from a mile away! Invest in updating dad’s style with a quality canvas or natural leather wallet that will last him for years to come. Elk is stocked in over 500 stores throughout the Unites States and Canada. To find your local stockist, contact the stellar team at firstname.lastname@example.org
Does dad’s office look like it has seen the aftermath of a tornado? Perhaps the perfect gift for your dad this year will be some tools to help him get organised! A great new desk lamp, a couple of fresh new ring binders, some simple office organisational tools and a smart looking document holder will inspire him to get back to order.
You really can’t go past a delicious breakfast in bed.
Just wake him up with the scent of freshly cooked bacon, some fresh new slippers, a freshly squeezed juice and you will have made his day. If you’re not the kitchen connoisseur, try taking dad out for a sweet local treat this Sunday in his local neighbourhood and start a new Fathers Day breakfast tradition.

Only twice a year are the day and night of equal length. For most of us this goes largely unnoticed. Throughout the seasons these subtle shifts in daylight hours are swallowed up in busy schedules and one day moves seamlessly into the next.
We design for a broad audience. With our thoughts scattered between different climates and even different hemispheres, we strive to balance ranges and evolve whilst staying true to the Elk aesthetic. Ultimately, it is our overriding desire to find the perfect balance has inspired this range. We believe this latest collection is our Equinox.
This season we focus on colour, fabrication and shape. We have embraced the cooler months with a rich jewel palette to brighten your wardrobe with rich reds, deep greens and moody blues. Beautiful, tactile materials and easy to wear pieces form one of our strongest collections to date.
We're thrilled to share our new offerings in the form of Equinox. Check out a behind the scenes video here.
